Top NZ placing!

31 December 2012

A few months ago I responded to an e mail invite and submitted some images to The International Loupe competition.
This is  large and prestigious, certainly some big names had entries, Peter Lik, Peter Eastway to name but a couple

The categories are open and amateur, landscape, photojournalism, portrait, wedding/commercial,nature and illustrative. Choosing catagories can be quite a skill in itself. For instance is the competition more stiff in the amateur or open parts?

Anyway, I entered 4 images for fun:to my surprise 2 received silver awards and 2 bronzes. My main serious contender received a silver award in the open landscape catagory, which I have recently learnt put it in 29th place. Not only that, but it was the only entry from a New Zealander in the Top 50. Not a win but something to be proud of all the same.

I still maintain, however, that competitions are fun and  great for the ego, but they are not the main reason or vindication for making images. They do not represent a body of worthwhile work, instead they are someone else’s opinion of your image. On the other hand when you do well they are great!!
